St Mary's Church

diss08.jpg
St Mary's Church is the nxet stop on the walk. First we hear about John Skelton, the poet laureate and Basil Abbott recites one of his most famous verses, written when he found a fellow clergyman "hawking" in the church. Canon Tony Billett greets us inside and we hear about the Mannings, a family that provided four generations of rectors to the town. We hear about bell ringing with a touching reminiscence from Kathleen Tebble who was Diss's celebrated tower captain until her retirement in 2007. Outside, we look at the Saracen's Head next door and reflect on how Diss obtained its wealth.
