We reach the other end of town, where the magnificent St Benet's Catholic church sits proudly. We are also close to the former Leman school, Beccles's state grammar school that produced many distinguised pupils, including a Nobel Prize winning chemist, an opera singer and many others. One of its former pupils, composer George Odon, tells of his father who was headmaster at the other school in Beccles and who had some fascinatingly progressive ideas about education.
