We walk up into town through the extremely attractive and atmospheric Northgate street. We learn why so many of Beccles's streets end in "gate" which is a clue at to the original layout of the town. In Northgate street, we hear about escaped cows, Field Marshall Claude Auchinleck, whose former residence we pass by, and the author Adrian Bell, who once gave David Woodward some very useful advice.
