Church Plain

loddon08.jpg
Old photographs show the extent of Church Plain better than we perhaps appreciate looking today, distracted as we are by the car park and trees. We hear the story of the school, built in the late 19th century, and what it was like to attend when the playground was used by fishmongers to dump their discarded waste. Typhoid used to be a problem in Loddon, because of contamination of the Church Plain water pump by human waste, traditionally buried in gardens, but then flushed into the water course during times of heavy rain. We meet one of the famous residents of Church Plain, Mr Alan Cook, who was known as the Midnight Baker because of his habit of delivering bread in the dead of night.
